Game Design Document

Project Design Document

I would like to present my first Project Design Document for the Multimedia Module that is aimed to help me to be able to prepare a well organised plan and get me ready when it comes to start developing my first game

Why do we need to create Project Design Document?

Preparing all the documentations ready before you start designing your game is normally thought to be the most boring part of Game Design, even game designers mention it in their tutorials, but it does not have to be. The well organised Project Design Document can help you and your team to have a better understand what you are expected to. Produce at the end of the entire process. It can speed up your work and avoid the obstacles that can appear during Design. So, referring to your Document can be a quite useful tool.

Project Design Document Sections:

  • The name of the Game

  • Location

  • Back story

  • Obstacles

  • Objects

  • Sound

  • Goals

  • Unique aspects

To the moment I have a clear picture in my head how the game should look and what are the main goals of the Game, so visualisation of the idea should aim to help others to imagine the result.

It also will help me to follow my plan and stick to it.

As the idea of the Game aims to reproduce an old game from my childhood, I included the section “Inspiration,” where the back story of the Game will be explained.

The Title

Catch me if you can

The wolf is catching bumps falling of the fur trees with a basket and if he misses one bump the game must start again.

 Location

The scenery of the game is in the wood using all attributes of the forest and bright colours. More like cartoon forest with fir trees.

Back story

There game is based on an old cartoon that was extremely popular and still is in Russia.

Public Domain

 Obstacles

The player must move left, right, and up and down to avoid missing to catch bumps, because if he does, he must start again.

The bumps fall of trees from different sides and the speed of falling increases when progressing to another level.

Objects

The player is holding a basket and catching bumps, so we have two objects in the Game:

 a basket

               Public Domain

 Bumps.

                 Public Domain

Sound

The music should be quite fast and funny, more like music for children and matching movements of the player.

Controls

Simple hands movements up and down, left and right using arrows of the keyboard or assigned letters.

Goals

The game should attract both children and adults with its easy and straight forward catching up idea.

Unique aspects

The game should attract with its colourful graphics and that it is straight forward in terms of using and be quite challenging when progressing to the next level.

 Distribution

As the Game is designed for a portable usage, so it can be children's consoles and App store and Google play if downloaded for a mobile device.

  4. Hey Svetlana,
I really love the idea for this game, it's really cool how you're making it like a cartoon from Russia. It seems like the game will be really enjoyable for all ages, especially for younger kids with all of the funny sound effects and music. It reminds me of the Lilo and Stitch sandwich making game I would always play as a kid.
I can't wait to see the final product when the game is done :)
    Rachael.

  5. Hey Svetlana,
Immediately after entering the blog post for further detail I could see your Game Design Document is very well structured. I really like the inspiration for your game. You chose something meaningful rather than a random idea and I admire that. I think I played the same game as my parents gave me a similar one hence I’m really excited to see your final game.
